Athel Enterprises Limited is a fast-growing African social enterprise based in Mombasa, Kenya, focused on delivering clean energy and sustainable cooking solutions across the continent. Since its establishment in 2019, the company has evolved from a local innovation initiative into a scalable manufacturer and distributor of solar-powered technologies.

The organization addresses key challenges such as energy poverty, deforestation, and health risks caused by traditional cooking methods. Its flagship product, the EcoMpishi Solar Electric Cooker, integrates solar power, battery storage, and clean cooking technology to provide an affordable and environmentally friendly alternative for households.

To date, Athel Enterprises has impacted over 1.2 million people, with a strong presence in East Africa and expansion strategies underway across West, Southern, Central, and North Africa. The company aims to reach 10 million households by 2030 through localized manufacturing, strategic partnerships, and innovative financing models such as Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG).

Company Overview and History

Founded in 2019 by Robert Nguma, Athel Enterprises emerged from a World Bank-funded innovation initiative in Kwale County. The goal was to develop a practical solution to Kenya’s clean cooking crisis, which led to the creation of the EcoMpishi Solar Cooker.

Today, the company operates a manufacturing facility in Mombasa and is expanding through regional assembly and distribution hubs in cities such as Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Lagos, Johannesburg, Dakar, and Accra. Plans are underway to localize production in key African markets to reduce costs, comply with AfCFTA regulations, and create employment opportunities.
